A water heater going in here is not being sized for a mild, stable environment. 83 severe weather events were recorded in Ohio County, West Virginia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing part of what equipment in this county runs against, and a contractor who treats local conditions as irrelevant will get the sizing wrong. Venting, pressure relief, and unit placement all get evaluated with that load in mind, not pulled from a spec sheet and called done.

Ductwork and electrical service laid into a house at the time it was built were sized and routed for what was available then, not for equipment a contractor brings today. Half the homes in Ohio County, West Virginia were built in 1956 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between the original build and the current installation is where jobs get complicated: venting paths that made sense for one fuel type do not always work for another, and chases that seemed adequate when the house went up were not planned around the clearances a modern water heater needs. A contractor pricing the job will need to look at what the house already contains before any other number makes sense.
What Gets Installed With a New Water Heater

The tank is the piece a homeowner notices first. It sits in a utility room, basement, or closet and holds the water that gets heated and sent through the house. Attached to the top of the tank are the hot and cold water connections, which feed water in and carry heated water out to every fixture.
The pressure relief valve mounts to the side of the tank and gives the system a safe release point if pressure builds too high. The anode rod sits inside the tank, suspended from the top, and protects the tank lining from corrosion. Below the tank, or integrated into it on tankless units, the burner assembly or heating element is what a contractor connects to the gas line or electrical supply during the install.
The drawing shows the general layout of a water heater system, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to this particular house.

Water heaters work harder when outdoor conditions push household demand up or down sharply, and the pattern of extreme weather a county sees over time shapes what the equipment is up against. That load history is a local fact, and it bears directly on what installation decisions make sense here.
